Testing the interactive two-step model of lexical access: Part I. picture naming

چکیده
The weight-decay (WD) and semantic-phonological (SP) models offer competing accounts of how brain damage disrupts processing within an interactive 2-step lexical-access framework. A few studies have compared these deficit models for how well they fit individual naming profiles on the Philadelphia Naming Test (PNT) (Dell, Lawler, Harris, & Gordon, 2004; Foygel & Dell, 2000; Ruml, Caramazza, Shelton, & Chialant, 2000). The results, good for both, offer little basis for choosing among them. Moreover, the numbers of patients whose profiles were fit in these studies was small. The largest had n = 21 (Foygel & Dell, 2000) and was potentially biased by exclusion of nonfluent aphasics and those with many responses outside the standard error categories. Here, the WD and SP models are compared with data from a new sample that is larger and unbiased in those respects.

Lexical Access in Persian Normal Speakers: Picture Naming, Verbal Fluency and Spontaneous Speech
Objectives: Lexical access is the process by which the basic conceptual, syntactical and morpho-phonological information of words are activated. Most studies of lexical access have focused on picture naming. There is hardly any previous research on other parameters of lexical access such as verbal fluency and analysis of connected speech in Persian normal participants. This study investigates t...
متن کاملLexical Access in Persian Speaking Children With and Without Specific Language Impairment
Introduction: Word retrieval problems are among the limitations observed in children with specific language impairment during the initial schooling years. These restrictions are predictive of reading problems and poor performance at school. Additionally, studies on lexical access in Persian speaking children are scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate and compare naming accuracy and ...
متن کاملPreferred Lexical Access Route in Persian Learners of English: Associative, Semantic or Both
Background: Words in the Mental Lexicon (ML) construct semantic field through associative and/ or semantic connections, with a pervasive native speaker preference for the former. Non-native preferences, however, demand further inquiry. Previous studies have revealed inconsistent Lexical Access (LA) patterns due to the limitations in the methodology and response categorization. Objectives: To f...
متن کاملEffect of grammatical gender and semantic context on lexical access in Italian.
The interacting effects of sentence context and grammatical gender on lexical access were investigated in Italian using a timed picture-naming paradigm. Results showed large interacting effects of both sentence context and the gender of the article, with facilitation relative to two different control conditions. Repeat testing yielded an overall decrease in RT, but did not change the pattern of...
متن کاملIs lexical selection in bilingual speech production language-specific? Further evidence from SpanishEnglish and EnglishSpanish bilinguals
In this study we address the question of how lexical selection is achieved by bilingual speakers during speech production. Speci®cally, we test whether there is competition between the two lexicons of a bilingual during lexical access. In two picture±word interference experiments we explore the performance of two groups of bilinguals, English±Spanish and Spanish±English pro®cient bilinguals whi...
